Hacker Alert! How to Protect Your Data

As technology becomes even more advanced (and hackers become even smarter), it is essential that we stay mindful of our online activities. From the risk of having our social media account hacked to losing important financial and personal data, there are risks we must be prepared for. Here are some tips to help you surf the web safely and keep your login credentials private.

Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks

Something lesser known about public Wi-Fi networks is that they come with its risks. When you sit at Starbucks and connect to that Wi-Fi without a password (because who doesn’t love free Wi-Fi?), you might actually be opening yourself up to data theft. Essentially, these open networks allow hackers to interfere between you and the hotspot, stealing whatever information is going through that channel.

The best way to protect yourself in these scenarios is to stay away from public Wi-Fi networks. If you need to use one, simply avoid entering any important details (e.g., credit card information, address etc.) while using these networks.

Enjoy 2-factor authentication

There’s a reason so many platforms have started integrating a 2-factor authentication process. As hacked social media accounts become an increasingly common occurrence, this extra layer of security ensures that you are properly verified before you log in to any platform.

Change your passwords regularly

We know what a hassle it can be to remember all your passwords – especially when we have so many online accounts. But rest assured, regularly changing your passwords goes a long way in keeping your accounts safe. Also, avoid using the same password for many different accounts.

Use Antivirus software

Installing an antivirus software on your computers and devices is a great way to protect against spam ads and online threats.

Update your apps frequently

While we often press the ‘Later’ button when asked to update our apps, the sooner you do it, the better! Developers are constantly working on providing users with a hassle-free experience, so updating your apps regularly ensures bugs and software malfunctions are less likely.

Stay safe and be mindful!
